Biocurpain

Biocurpain is a botanical combination drug product containing extracts of *Curcuma longa* (turmeric) and *Boswellia serrata* (Indian frankincense). It is primarily indicated for the management of osteoarthritis (OA), specifically targeting pain relief and the improvement of functional status in affected patients. The drug's mechanism of action is attributed to the anti-inflammatory properties of its active botanical constituents—curcumin from *Curcuma longa* and boswellic acids from *Boswellia serrata*—which modulate inflammatory pathways relevant to joint disease, such as the inhibition of 5-lipoxygenase (5-LOX) and cyclooxygenase (COX) enzymes. Developed by the Duta Wacana Christian University School of Medicine, Biocurpain was evaluated in a randomized controlled trial in Indonesia, where it demonstrated efficacy comparable to non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) like ibuprofen in improving functional status as measured by the WOMAC index. It holds an Indonesian marketing authorization (TR172599281) and is classified as a traditional herbal medicine.
