Overview

BioCyst is an oral phytotherapeutic combination developed by CytoChemia for the prevention and supportive treatment of urinary tract infections (UTIs). The formulation primarily consists of cranberry extract and D-mannose, which work synergistically to maintain bladder health. Cranberry extract contains proanthocyanidins (PACs) that interfere with the P-fimbriae of uropathogenic *Escherichia coli* (UPEC), while D-mannose acts as a competitive inhibitor of Type 1 fimbriae. Together, these components prevent bacteria from adhering to the urothelial cells of the bladder wall, facilitating their clearance through urine. This non-antibiotic approach is particularly utilized for UTI prophylaxis in patients with recurrent infections to reduce reliance on antimicrobial agents. It is marketed in Germany as a dietary supplement intended for long-term urinary tract support.
