Drug intelligence / Profile preview
BioDebrid is a topical debriding ointment developed by Bion Therapeutics for the management of acute and chronic wounds, including pressure ulcers, diabetic foot ulcers, varicose ulcers, burns, and surgical wounds. It is a fixed-dose combination containing papain, a proteolytic cysteine protease enzyme derived from the papaya fruit (*Carica papaya*), and urea, a keratolytic and moisturizing agent. Papain selectively cleaves peptide bonds in nonviable (necrotic) tissue, such as denatured collagen, fibrin, and elastin, without harming viable tissue. Urea acts synergistically by disrupting hydrogen bonds to denature and soften proteins (such as keratin), making them more accessible to papain's enzymatic action, while also hydrating the wound bed. Together, these components facilitate the removal of necrotic tissue and slough, thin pus in lesions, and promote faster wound healing.
