Biodentine is a bioactive calcium silicate-based dental material designed as a high-performance dentin substitute. Developed by Septodont, it is used in both restorative and endodontic procedures, including pulp capping, pulpotomy, and the repair of root perforations or resorptions. The material consists of a powder (primarily tricalcium silicate) and a liquid (calcium chloride accelerator), which when mixed, form a biocompatible cement with mechanical properties similar to natural dentin. Its mechanism involves the release of calcium ions and the creation of an alkaline environment, which stimulates odontoblasts to secrete reparative dentin (dentin bridge formation) and exhibits antimicrobial properties. It is frequently compared to Mineral Trioxide Aggregate (MTA) but offers improved handling properties and a faster setting time.
