Biodentine is a bioactive calcium silicate-based dental material designed as a high-purity dentin substitute. Developed by Septodont using Active Biosilicate Technology, it is used in restorative and endodontic procedures such as pulp capping, pulpotomy, and the treatment of deep dental caries. Upon mixing its powder (primarily tricalcium silicate) and liquid (calcium chloride accelerator) components, the material undergoes a hydration reaction that releases calcium and hydroxyl ions. This process creates an alkaline environment that stimulates odontoblasts to differentiate and form reparative dentin (dentin bridges). Biodentine is characterized by its biocompatibility, high mechanical strength, and faster setting time compared to traditional Mineral Trioxide Aggregate (MTA) materials.
