Overview

Bioengineered *Staphylococcus epidermidis* is a live biotherapeutic product (LBP) being developed by Azitra, Inc., in collaboration with The Jackson Laboratory. This microbiome-based therapy utilizes a genetically modified strain of *S. epidermidis*, a common skin commensal bacterium, to produce and secrete bioactive antimicrobial compounds. These compounds are specifically designed to inhibit the growth of *Staphylococcus aureus*, including methicillin-resistant strains (MRSA), which are primary drivers of skin infections and exacerbations in conditions like atopic dermatitis. By leveraging the natural skin-colonizing properties of *S. epidermidis*, the therapy aims to restore microbial balance and provide a localized defense mechanism against pathogens. The program has received support from the U.S. Department of Defense to develop natural defense mechanisms against skin infections.
