Overview
Biofermin is a probiotic medication primarily used for the regulation of intestinal flora and the treatment of symptoms such as diarrhea, constipation, and abdominal bloating. Developed and manufactured by Biofermin Pharmaceutical (a subsidiary of Taisho Pharmaceutical), it typically contains a combination of beneficial bacteria, including *Bifidobacterium bifidum*, *Enterococcus faecalis*, and *Lactobacillus acidophilus*. In clinical settings, it is often prescribed to mitigate gastrointestinal side effects of other therapies, such as antibiotic-associated diarrhea. It is currently being evaluated in the MERMAID Phase II study in Japan to determine its efficacy in reducing the incidence and severity of diarrhea induced by the CDK4/6 inhibitor abemaciclib in patients with hormone receptor-positive, HER2-negative unresectable or metastatic breast cancer.
