BioFoam is a brand name used for two distinct medical technologies. Primarily, in surgical contexts, **BioFoam Surgical Matrix** is a protein-based hemostatic sealant developed by Artivion (formerly CryoLife). It consists of bovine serum albumin (BSA) and a glutaraldehyde cross-linking agent. Separately, in orthopedic contexts, **BioFoam** refers to a porous titanium metal technology (marketed by MicroPort and formerly Wright Medical) used as a coating for joint replacement components (e.g., in the EVOLUTION and DYNASTY systems). This foam-like metal structure is designed to mimic cancellous bone, facilitating biological bone ingrowth to improve the long-term fixation of hip and knee implants. Additionally, the term is used generically in academic research for a variety of sustainable, bio-based foam materials derived from sources like alginate, starch, or fungal mycelium.
