Overview
BioGaia Prodentis is a probiotic combination therapy consisting of two specific strains of Lactobacillus reuteri: DSM 17938 and ATCC PTA 5289. Investigated by the University of Copenhagen for the treatment of symptomatic oral lichen planus (OLP), this intervention is delivered as intra-oral lozenges designed to modulate the oral microbiome and host inflammatory responses. The probiotic strains work through immunomodulatory mechanisms and the production of antimicrobial substances to inhibit the overgrowth of opportunistic pathogens, particularly Candida albicans, which is a common complication in OLP patients. By restoring microbial homeostasis and reducing inflammation, BioGaia Prodentis aims to alleviate the clinical manifestations and symptoms of OLP, often serving as an adjunct to conventional antifungal or corticosteroid therapies like nystatin or fluocinolone.
