Overview

BioLean is a multi-ingredient dietary supplement formulated for weight reduction and the management of obesity. It consists of a combination of amino acids, including L-phenylalanine, L-tyrosine, and L-carnitine, alongside a complex proprietary herbal blend. The primary active component for weight loss is Ma Huang (Ephedra sinica), which contains ephedrine alkaloids that function as sympathomimetic beta-adrenergic receptor agonists to stimulate thermogenesis and increase energy expenditure. Other herbal ingredients in the formulation include green tea, schizandrae berry, rehmannia root, and hawthorn berry, among others. Developed and marketed by Wellness International Network, BioLean was historically listed in the Physicians' Desk Reference for Nonprescription Drugs and Dietary Supplements. However, the sale of dietary supplements containing ephedrine alkaloids was prohibited by the U.S. FDA in 2004 due to significant safety risks, including cardiovascular events.
