Overview

The biological amniotic membrane is the innermost layer of the placenta and has been used therapeutically for over a century. It is a biologic tissue rich in growth factors, cytokines, proteins, and other bioactive molecules. The main mechanisms of action include immunomodulation, anti-scarring (anti-fibrotic), antimicrobial activity, pro- or anti-angiogenic effects (depending on application site), and promotion of tissue regeneration. These properties make it valuable in regenerative medicine and surgical applications across multiple specialties such as ophthalmology, gynecology, plastic surgery, gastrointestinal surgery, traumatology/orthopedics, neurosurgery, wound care (including burns and ulcers), cardiac repair/tissue engineering for cardiovascular diseases (as a bioscaffold), and more. Its clinical benefits are attributed to its ability to reduce inflammation and scarring while accelerating healing through cellular signaling pathways that promote proliferation and migration[1][2][3].
