Overview

Biologically active human fecal material is a fecal microbiota transplant (FMT) product sourced, pre-screened, and processed by OpenBiome. It consists of a complete community of microorganisms, including bacteria, fungi, and viruses, derived from healthy donor stool. The therapy is designed to restore a healthy and diverse gut microbiome in patients suffering from dysbiosis. It has been investigated in clinical trials, such as a pilot study led by Najwa Elnachef (NCT02428361), for the treatment of acute or chronic pouchitis in patients who have undergone proctocolectomy with ileal pouch-anal anastomosis (IPAA). The product is typically administered as a 250 mL suspension via endoscopic routes such as pouchoscopy or colonoscopy.
