The BioMatrix drug-eluting stent (DES) is a coronary medical device developed by Biosensors International for the treatment of coronary artery disease and myocardial ischemia. It features a stainless steel stent platform coated with a biodegradable polylactic acid (PLA) polymer that elutes Biolimus A9 (umirolimus), a highly lipophilic analogue of sirolimus. The drug acts as an mTOR inhibitor, suppressing smooth muscle cell proliferation and neointimal hyperplasia to prevent restenosis following percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI). The BioMatrix stent is distinguished by its abluminal coating, which ensures drug delivery primarily to the vessel wall, and its biodegradable polymer, which fully resorbs into water and carbon dioxide within 6 to 9 months, potentially reducing long-term inflammation and the risk of very late stent thrombosis compared to permanent polymer stents.
