Overview

Biomatrix Alpha (BioMatrix Alpha) is a drug-eluting coronary stent (DES) developed by Biosensors International Group. It features a thin-strut (83-micrometer) cobalt-chromium stent platform with a hybrid design that combines S-shaped connectors for flexibility and straight connectors for longitudinal strength. The device utilizes an abluminal biodegradable polymer coating that elutes umirolimus (also known as biolimus A9 or BA9), a highly lipophilic semi-synthetic analogue of sirolimus. The polymer is fully absorbed within 6 to 9 months, leaving behind a bare-metal stent surface to potentially reduce the risk of late stent thrombosis. Biomatrix Alpha is used in percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) to treat coronary artery disease, including complex lesions and bifurcations. It has received CE Mark approval but is not available for sale in the United States.
