The Biomatrix drug eluting stent is a family of coronary stents that utilize an abluminal biodegradable polymer coating to deliver Biolimus A9 (also known as BA9), a highly lipophilic sirolimus derivative. The mechanism of action involves local inhibition of the mammalian target of rapamycin (m-TOR) pathway in vascular smooth muscle cells, resulting in reduced neointimal hyperplasia and restenosis after percutaneous coronary intervention. The biodegradable poly-lactic acid (PLA) polymer matrix is absorbed within 6–9 months after implantation, leaving only the bare metal stent in place. This targeted delivery system minimizes systemic exposure and reduces long-term inflammatory response associated with permanent polymers. The Biomatrix platform includes several iterations such as Flex, NeoFlex, and Alpha models; all are designed for improved deliverability and vessel healing[1][4][5][6].
