Overview

BiomeBank faecal microbiota transplantation (brand name: BIOMICTRA) is a donor-derived, regulated microbiome-based therapy developed by the Australian biotechnology company BiomeBank. It consists of screened and processed human donor stool (faecal microbiota) suspended in sodium chloride and glycerol, and is frozen in a syringe-based formulation. BIOMICTRA is approved by Australia's Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA) for the restoration of gut microbiota in the treatment of recurrent Clostridioides difficile infection (CDI), making it the world's first microbiome-based therapy regulated as a biological. It is administered via colonoscopy, enema, or nasogastric/nasoenteric tube. BiomeBank is also developing an oral capsule formulation (LYOMICTRA) and investigating the therapy under the Special Access Scheme and in clinical trials for other gastrointestinal disorders, including ulcerative colitis, Crohn's disease, irritable bowel syndrome, immune checkpoint inhibitor-induced enterocolitis, and functional constipation.
