Overview

This therapy is a combination of a biomimetic cartilage matrix (a synthetic or natural scaffold designed to mimic the structure and function of native articular cartilage) and autologous chondrocytes (cartilage cells harvested from the patient). The process involves isolating healthy chondrocytes from the patient, expanding them in vitro, and then seeding them onto a three-dimensional biomimetic scaffold. This construct is implanted into the site of cartilage damage to promote regeneration of hyaline-like cartilage. The mechanism relies on providing both viable cells capable of producing new extracellular matrix and a supportive environment that mimics native tissue architecture, enhancing cell survival, integration, and functional repair. This approach is most commonly used for symptomatic full-thickness articular cartilage defects in joints such as the knee[2][4][5][7]. Matrix-induced autologous chondrocyte implantation (MACI) is an FDA-approved example using this principle.
