Bionanomatrix AVF Gel is a nitric oxide-releasing peptide-based biomaterial developed by Endomimetics to enhance the maturation and patency of arteriovenous fistulas (AVF) in patients with end-stage renal disease requiring hemodialysis. The gel utilizes a self-assembling peptide matrix that provides a scaffold for the controlled release of nitric oxide directly to the site of the vascular anastomosis. By mimicking the natural signaling of the endothelium, the therapy promotes endothelial cell proliferation and migration while inhibiting the proliferation of smooth muscle cells. This dual mechanism is designed to prevent neointimal hyperplasia and stenosis, which are the primary causes of AVF maturation failure and subsequent access loss. The program is currently in IND-enabling studies.
