Overview

Biophilus (also marketed as Antibiophilus) is a probiotic preparation containing the live lactic acid bacterium *Lactobacillus rhamnosus* (specifically the *Lactobacillus rhamnosus* LCR35 strain, formerly classified as *Lactobacillus casei variety rhamnosus*). Developed originally by Laboratoires Lyocentre and marketed by companies including Orion Pharma and Germania Pharmazeutika, it is used to restore and maintain a balanced intestinal microbiota. It is primarily indicated for the prevention and treatment of diarrhea of various origins, including antibiotic-associated diarrhea and radiation-induced diarrhea, as well as other gastrointestinal disorders like irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) and constipation. The probiotic works by colonizing the gastrointestinal tract, competing with pathogenic microorganisms, producing lactic acid and other bacteriostatic metabolites, and modulating the mucosal immune response.
