Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Biopolio is a **polio vaccine** developed and manufactured by Bharat Biotech for prevention of poliomyelitis caused by poliovirus. The name refers to more than one product formulation: an **inactivated trivalent poliovirus vaccine** containing Salk poliovirus types 1, 2, and 3 grown in Vero cell culture, and an **oral live-attenuated formulation** marketed as Biopolio B1/3 containing attenuated poliovirus types 1 and 3. As a vaccine, its mechanism is induction of protective humoral immunity against poliovirus antigens, thereby preventing infection-related paralysis and disease. It is used for primary immunization and booster vaccination in infants, children, and adults, and the product received WHO prequalification in March 2015.
