Overview

Biosilicate is a patented bioactive glass-ceramic biomaterial within the quaternary system $P_2O_5-Na_2O-CaO-SiO_2$. Specifically composed of 23.75% Na2O, 23.75% CaO, 48.5% SiO2, and 4% P2O5, it is characterized by its ability to undergo surface reactions in aqueous environments, such as saliva, to form a layer of hydroxycarbonapatite (HCA). This mineral layer is chemically and structurally similar to human bone and dental tissue. In clinical dentistry, Biosilicate is utilized as a desensitizing agent to treat dentin hypersensitivity by occluding open dentinal tubules, as a remineralizing agent for caries-affected dentin and enamel erosion, and as a bioactive additive in restorative materials like glass ionomer cements and resins. It has demonstrated efficacy in preventing tooth sensitivity associated with dental bleaching and is being investigated for managing pain in Molar-Incisor Hypomineralization (MIH).
