Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Biosuccinium S is a high-purity, 100% bio-based pharmaceutical grade of succinic acid produced via a proprietary yeast-based fermentation process. Originally developed by Reverdia (a joint venture between DSM and Roquette), it serves as a sustainable alternative to petroleum-derived succinic acid. In the pharmaceutical industry, Biosuccinium S is utilized as a versatile building block for the synthesis of active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs), a buffering agent in drug formulations, and a counter-ion for the production of succinate salts. In dermo-cosmetics and topical therapeutics, it is increasingly employed as an active ingredient due to its antimicrobial properties—specifically against *Cutibacterium acnes*—and its role as an endogenous ligand for the succinate receptor 1 (SUCNR1/GPR91), which modulates cellular metabolism and inflammatory responses. Its high chemical purity and low carbon footprint make it suitable for sensitive applications in personal care, nutraceuticals, and pharmaceutical manufacturing.
