Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Biotene is a specialized line of oral care products designed to alleviate the symptoms of xerostomia, commonly known as dry mouth. Originally developed by Laclede and currently owned by GSK, Biotene products are formulated to provide immediate and long-lasting relief for patients whose salivary production is compromised by conditions such as Sjögren's syndrome, diabetes, or as a side effect of medications and radiation therapy. The therapeutic efficacy of Biotene stems from its ability to supplement the mouth's natural defenses. Historically, the formulation was centered around the LP3 Enzyme System, which incorporates lactoperoxidase, lysozyme, and glucose oxidase to replicate the antimicrobial environment of healthy saliva. Modern iterations focus heavily on advanced humectants and lubricants, including glycerin, xylitol, and sorbitol, which help to hydrate oral tissues, balance pH, and prevent the complications associated with dry mouth, such as dental caries and oral infections.
