Overview
Biotene Dry Mouth Oral Rinse is a commercially available over-the-counter oral rinse formulated as a saliva substitute to relieve the symptoms of dry mouth (xerostomia). It is a non-biologic, small molecule topical formulation containing a combination of moisturizers and humectants, including glycerin, xylitol, sorbitol, and propylene glycol, and is free of alcohol, sugar, and sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS). The rinse acts by retaining water and lubricating the oral mucosal tissue, providing up to 4 hours of symptomatic relief per use. It is being evaluated in clinical trials, such as the 'BIG DRY' perioperative trial in New Zealand led by Dr. Doug Campbell, to assess its efficacy in reducing preoperative dry mouth in elective adult surgical patients compared to a water mouth rinse.
