Biotene Moisturizing Mouth Spray

Biotene Moisturizing Mouth Spray is an over-the-counter oral care product designed as a saliva substitute to provide symptomatic relief for xerostomia (dry mouth). It contains a combination of enzymes, including glucose oxidase, lactoperoxidase, and lysozyme, which are intended to mimic the natural protective and moisturizing properties of human saliva. The University of Southern California (USC) initiated a Phase 4 clinical trial (NCT02522936) to evaluate the product's efficacy in reducing the discontinuation of oxybutynin, an anticholinergic medication for overactive bladder, by mitigating medication-induced dry mouth. However, the study was ultimately withdrawn. Biotene is classified as a topical oral moisturizer rather than a traditional small molecule pharmaceutical.
