Biotene Mouthwash

It is formulated to mimic the natural protective environment of saliva through a combination of moisturizing agents and a salivary enzyme system, typically including lactoferrin, lysozyme, lactoperoxidase, and glucose oxidase. These enzymes are intended to supplement the mouth's natural defenses and maintain a healthy oral environment. In a clinical research context, the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) utilized Biotene as a placebo/control condition in a randomized crossover study (NCT03133299) evaluating the efficacy of an antibacterial mouthwash (Listerine) in preventing pharyngeal gonorrhea among high-risk populations. Biotene was selected as the comparator because it lacks the potent antibacterial essential oils found in antiseptic mouthwashes, serving as a non-antibacterial moisturizing rinse.
