Overview

Biotene Oralbalance is a specialized moisturizing gel developed for the management of xerostomia (dry mouth) symptoms. It functions primarily as a saliva substitute and oral lubricant, designed to provide long-lasting relief from the discomfort of oral dryness. The formulation utilizes a combination of humectants and mucoadhesive polymers, such as glycerin and xylitol, which work to create a protective, moisture-retaining film over the oral mucosa. This film mimics the physical properties of natural saliva, reducing friction and soothing irritated tissues. While historical versions of the product contained an enzyme system (including lactoperoxidase, lysozyme, and glucose oxidase) to provide antimicrobial support, the current GlaxoSmithKline (GSK) formulations focus on optimized physical lubrication and moisture retention to improve patient comfort and oral health in those with diminished salivary flow.
