Biotinylated red blood cells are red blood cells (RBCs) that have been chemically tagged with biotin (Vitamin B7) to serve as a non-radioactive tracer for measuring RBC survival and kinetics. In clinical research conducted by John A. Widness, these labeled cells are transfused into neonates to determine RBC lifespan, which is a critical factor in the pathophysiology of neonatal anemia. By tracking the concentration of biotinylated cells over time using flow cytometry, clinicians can differentiate between anemia caused by decreased production versus increased destruction or loss of RBCs. This diagnostic approach helps in personalizing erythropoietin (EPO) therapy for very low birth weight (VLBW) infants.
