Overview

BioUcenta is a biosimilar to Lucentis (ranibizumab), developed as a monoclonal antibody therapy for the treatment of diabetic macular edema (DME), wet (neovascular) age-related macular degeneration (AMD), and diabetic retinopathy. BioUcenta is specifically intended to increase access to advanced biologic ophthalmic therapy in Sub-Saharan Africa by providing a high-quality, affordable alternative. The drug inhibits vascular endothelial growth factor A (VEGF-A) in the retina, thereby blocking abnormal blood vessel growth and leakage—key processes in vision loss associated with these retinal diseases. Ranibizumab, the reference drug, has been widely used globally for these indications, but BioUcenta is being introduced to expand reach in previously underserved populations[1][2][3][4][6][7][8].
