Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Biovac OCV-S is an inactivated whole-cell monovalent (O1) oral cholera vaccine developed by the South African bio-pharmaceutical company Biovac in partnership with the International Vaccine Institute (IVI). Designed to prevent cholera caused by *Vibrio cholerae* bacteria, the vaccine is produced through a technology transfer agreement and represents the first end-to-end vaccine manufacturing initiative in Africa, covering the entire process from bacterial strain cultivation to final production. It is currently being evaluated in Phase I/III clinical trials in South Africa to assess its safety, immunogenicity, and lot-to-lot consistency compared to the WHO pre-qualified reference vaccine Euvichol-Plus, with specific cohorts including healthy individuals aged 1-45 and adults living with HIV.
