Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Bioxyma (BX) is an oral small molecule combination therapy developed by Orphinic Scientific and its subsidiary Bioxyma Sp. z o.o. for the management of chronic pain, cancer pain, and breakthrough cancer pain. The formulation combines the opioid analgesic oxycodone with magnesium lactate. The inclusion of magnesium is intended to address opioid-induced hyperalgesia (OIH), a condition where patients become more sensitive to pain due to chronic opioid use. Magnesium acts as a physiological antagonist of the N-methyl-D-aspartate (NMDA) receptor, which plays a key role in the development of central sensitization and opioid tolerance. By modulating these pathways, Bioxyma aims to provide effective analgesia while potentially reducing the dose-limiting side effects and paradoxical pain associated with traditional opioid therapy. The program is currently in the preclinical proof-of-concept stage.
