Overview

**Biperiden** is a synthetic anticholinergic (antimuscarinic) agent used primarily as an adjunct in the treatment of all forms of Parkinson's disease (idiopathic, postencephalitic, and arteriosclerotic), and for the management of drug-induced extrapyramidal symptoms caused by neuroleptic agents such as phenothiazines. It acts mainly by competitively antagonizing acetylcholine at muscarinic receptors in the central nervous system, particularly within the corpus striatum, thereby helping to restore balance between cholinergic and dopaminergic neurotransmission that is disrupted in parkinsonism. In addition to its central effects, biperiden has weak peripheral anticholinergic activity with some antisecretory, antispasmodic, mydriatic, and nicotinolytic properties. It can be administered orally or parenterally (intramuscular or intravenous). Common side effects include dry mouth, blurred vision, constipation, confusion, tachycardia and urinary retention.
