Biperiden + citalopram is a combination of two pharmaceutical agents, each with distinct mechanisms of action. Biperiden is a centrally acting muscarinic acetylcholine receptor antagonist, primarily used to treat Parkinson's disease and to control extrapyramidal side effects induced by neuroleptic drugs. It acts mainly as an antagonist at the muscarinic acetylcholine receptor M1, thereby reducing cholinergic activity in the central nervous system[3][5]. Citalopram is a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI) used for the treatment of depression and related mood disorders. It increases synaptic serotonin levels by inhibiting its reuptake into presynaptic neurons, with minimal effect on other neurotransmitter systems[2][4]. The combination has been studied experimentally to assess cognitive effects; biperiden impairs memory performance while citalopram does not reverse this impairment nor significantly affect memory or attention when administered alone[1][4].
