Overview

Biphozyl is a phosphate-containing, calcium-free electrolyte solution used as a replacement fluid or dialysate in continuous renal replacement therapy (CRRT). It is specifically formulated for patients with acute kidney injury (AKI) who require phosphate supplementation or are undergoing regional citrate anticoagulation (RCA). Because Biphozyl lacks calcium, it prevents premature clotting in the extracorporeal circuit when citrate is used as an anticoagulant, while its phosphate content helps maintain normal serum phosphate levels and prevents CRRT-induced hypophosphatemia. The solution also contains bicarbonate to assist in the management of acid-base balance. It was developed by Baxter International and is now part of the Vantive Health portfolio.
