Birch MATA MPL is a subcutaneous immunotherapy (SCIT) developed by Allergy Therapeutics for the treatment of allergic rhinitis caused by birch pollen. The product is based on the proprietary MATA MPL platform, which utilizes chemically modified allergens (allergoids) to reduce IgE-mediated reactivity while maintaining immunogenicity. These allergoids are adsorbed onto microcrystalline tyrosine (MCT), which acts as a biodegradable depot for sustained release, and are combined with monophosphoryl lipid A (MPL), a Toll-like receptor 4 (TLR4) agonist. This adjuvant system is designed to enhance the Th1 immune response and induce regulatory T cells, shifting the immune system away from the Th2-mediated allergic response. The treatment is typically administered as a short pre-seasonal course of injections to induce long-term immune tolerance to birch, alder, and hazel pollen allergens.
