Birch pollen refers to the airborne allergenic particles released by birch trees (genus Betula), which are a major cause of seasonal allergic rhinitis (hay fever) in many regions. Birch pollen is not a pharmaceutical drug but is used as an active ingredient in allergen immunotherapy for individuals with birch pollen allergy. The mechanism of action in immunotherapy involves gradually exposing the immune system to controlled amounts of birch pollen allergens, aiming to induce tolerance and reduce allergic symptoms over time. This can be administered via subcutaneous injections (allergy shots) or sublingual tablets/drops. Birch pollen immunotherapy has been shown to reduce symptoms such as sneezing, nasal congestion, and itchy eyes during the birch pollination season[2][5]. It is also associated with cross-reactivity to other related tree pollens due to homologous proteins.
