Overview

Birch pollen allergen immunotherapy is a disease-modifying treatment designed to induce tolerance to birch pollen allergens and treat moderate to severe allergic rhinitis and/or conjunctivitis caused by birch tree pollen. It works by exposing the immune system to controlled doses of birch pollen allergen—either sublingual (SLIT, tablet) or subcutaneous (SCIT, injection)—over an extended period (3–5 years), retraining the immune system and providing long-term symptom relief beyond the effect of antihistamines or corticosteroids. The SLIT tablet (Itulazax) contains a standardized birch pollen allergen extract (Bet v 1), and the depigmented polymerized SCIT extract is administered monthly by injection. Both forms are specifically indicated for patients with a confirmed birch pollen allergy, especially those whose symptoms are uncontrolled by conventional therapies. Clinical trials have shown long-term efficacy and safety for both modalities, with significant and sustained reductions in allergic symptoms and medication use, as well as decreased risk of developing asthma[1][2][3][4][6].
