Overview

Birch pollen allergoid is a modified allergen extract derived from *Betula verrucosa* (birch) pollen, used for subcutaneous immunotherapy (SCIT) in patients with moderate to severe seasonal allergic rhinitis or rhinoconjunctivitis, with or without asthma. The preparation consists of an aluminium hydroxide-adsorbed allergoid designed to reduce allergenicity while maintaining immunogenicity. Its mechanism of action involves immune modulation—specifically the induction of regulatory T cells and IL-10–secreting Tr1 cells—which leads to tolerance against birch allergens and suppression of allergy-promoting cytokines. The product is marketed under the brand name Allergovit Birch by Allergopharma (a subsidiary of Merck KGaA), and has demonstrated efficacy and safety in clinical trials for up to three years. It is administered via injection according to a standardized dosing schedule[1][2][6].
