Birch pollen extract is a standardized allergenic preparation derived from the pollen of the white birch tree (Betula verrucosa). It is primarily used in allergen immunotherapy (AIT) for the treatment and prevention of allergic rhinitis and rhinoconjunctivitis caused by sensitization to birch or related tree pollens. The mechanism of action involves gradual exposure to controlled doses of birch allergens to induce immune tolerance and reduce allergic symptoms. This therapy can be administered as sublingual tablets or drops (SLIT), or as subcutaneous injections (SCIT). Clinical trials have demonstrated that birch pollen extract immunotherapy significantly reduces allergy symptoms and medication use during the tree pollen season and may provide long-term benefits by reducing new-onset asthma risk[4][5][6][10]. Major commercial products include ITULATEK (ALK), Staloral Birch (Stallergenes Greer), and others.
