Overview

Bis(5-amidino-2-benzimidazolyl)methane (BABIM) is a synthetic small molecule featuring two benzimidazole rings connected by a methylene bridge and substituted with amidino groups. It belongs to the class of benzimidazole derivatives, which are known for diverse biological activities including antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, and anticancer effects[3][6]. BABIM has been studied primarily as an experimental inhibitor of serine proteases such as tryptase and trypsin[10]. In preclinical models, it has demonstrated antiviral and antiarthritic properties by inhibiting the replication of certain viruses in mice and reducing inflammation in arthritic rats[10][5]. Its mechanism involves competitive inhibition at the active site of target proteases. The compound is not approved for clinical use but remains a subject of research interest due to its unique structure and potential pharmacological applications.
