Overview

Bis(5-Amidino-2-Benzimidazolyl)Methane Ketone is a synthetic small molecule belonging to the class of amidino-substituted benzimidazole derivatives. Compounds within this class have demonstrated in vitro antitumor and antiviral activities. Specifically, some bis-benzimidazole derivatives have been shown to interfere with DNA topoisomerase I and exhibit cytotoxic effects against various human cancer cell lines, including HeLa (cervix adenocarcinoma), MCF7 (breast adenocarcinoma), and A431 (skin epidermoid carcinoma). The broader class of benzimidazoles is known to act through mechanisms such as DNA minor groove binding, topoisomerase I or II inhibition, interactions with microtubules, and inhibition of tumor helicases. Additionally, some amidino-substituted benzimidazoles have shown antiviral activity against coxsackieviruses, echoviruses, and adenoviruses. Research on these compounds, including their synthesis and preclinical screening, has been conducted by institutions such as the University of Zagreb and Fidelta Ltd.
