Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Bisacodyl + simeticone is a fixed-dose combination therapy designed to address both constipation and the associated symptom of bloating. Bisacodyl is a diphenylmethane derivative stimulant laxative that acts directly on the colonic mucosa to stimulate sensory nerve endings, thereby increasing peristalsis and promoting bowel movements. Simeticone (also known as simethicone) is an orally administered anti-foaming agent that acts mechanically by reducing the surface tension of gas bubbles in the gastrointestinal tract, allowing them to coalesce and be passed more easily. This combination provides a dual-action approach: bisacodyl offers overnight relief from constipation, while simeticone provides immediate relief from gas-related discomfort and bloating. The combination has been evaluated in clinical trials (such as NCT02211976) and is typically used in over-the-counter (OTC) gastrointestinal products.
