Overview

Bisbenthiamine is a lipid-soluble disulfide derivative of thiamine (Vitamin B1) that functions as a prodrug with enhanced bioavailability compared to standard thiamine salts. By crossing cell membranes more effectively, it provides a sustained supply of thiamine, which is subsequently phosphorylated into thiamine pyrophosphate (TPP). TPP is a critical cofactor for several key enzymes in carbohydrate metabolism, including pyruvate dehydrogenase, alpha-ketoglutarate dehydrogenase, and transketolase. Bisbenthiamine is utilized to treat Vitamin B1 deficiency and associated conditions such as beriberi, Wernicke-Korsakoff syndrome, and various forms of peripheral neuropathy. Skanttr Lifescience includes this small molecule in its nutritional product portfolio as an approved therapy.
