Overview

Biseptine is a topical antiseptic solution widely used for skin disinfection and the treatment of minor wounds. It is a combination product containing three active ingredients: chlorhexidine digluconate, benzalkonium chloride, and benzyl alcohol. Chlorhexidine is a biguanide that provides long-lasting antibacterial activity by binding to and disrupting the bacterial cell wall and plasma membrane. Benzalkonium chloride, a quaternary ammonium compound, acts as a cationic surfactant that further destabilizes microbial membranes. Benzyl alcohol contributes to the antiseptic effect and provides mild local anesthetic properties. Together, these components offer broad-spectrum efficacy against Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria, as well as certain fungi and viruses. It is primarily marketed by Bayer and is a staple in first-aid and surgical skin preparation in several European markets.
