Bismuth-213-bovine serum albumin (213Bi-BSA) is an experimental radiopharmaceutical conjugate consisting of the alpha-particle emitting radioisotope bismuth-213 linked to bovine serum albumin (BSA). It is primarily utilized as a research tool in preclinical studies to model the pharmacokinetics and toxicological profile of long-circulating alpha-radioimmunotherapy vectors. By simulating the behavior of radiolabeled macromolecules in the systemic circulation, 213Bi-BSA allows researchers to evaluate acute and chronic dose-limiting toxicities to vital organs, such as the liver and kidneys, which are often exposed to non-specific irradiation from circulating radiopharmaceuticals. It is not currently developed as a therapeutic agent for human use but serves as a critical benchmark for establishing safety parameters in the development of targeted alpha therapies for cancer.
