Overview

Bismuth aluminate is an inorganic small molecule used as an antacid and mucosal protective agent. It is primarily indicated for the treatment of gastric and duodenal ulcers, chronic gastritis, and gastric hyperacidity. Its mechanism of action involves the neutralization of gastric acid and the formation of a protective protein-bismuth complex film over the ulcerated mucosa, which shields the tissue from pepsin and acid damage. Furthermore, bismuth aluminate exhibits direct bactericidal activity against *Helicobacter pylori*, making it a common component of bismuth-containing quadruple therapy (BQT) regimens for *H. pylori* eradication. In clinical practice, it is frequently found in "compound" formulations (e.g., Compound Bismuth Aluminate) alongside other antacids like magnesium carbonate and sodium bicarbonate to provide synergistic relief of gastrointestinal symptoms.
