Overview

Bismuth cation (Bi3+) is the trivalent, positively charged ion of the element bismuth. It serves as the active moiety in several medicinal compounds, most notably in gastrointestinal agents such as bismuth subsalicylate and other bismuth salts. Bismuth cations exhibit antimicrobial and bactericidal properties by interfering with bacterial adhesion to mucosal surfaces and disrupting microbial cell walls. They also have anti-inflammatory effects when present as part of salicylate-containing compounds. Bismuth-based drugs are primarily used for symptomatic relief of gastrointestinal disorders including diarrhea, heartburn, indigestion, and upset stomach. Additionally, certain formulations are used in combination therapies for *Helicobacter pylori* eradication in peptic ulcer disease[1][4][5][8]. The precise mechanism of action is not fully understood but involves both direct antimicrobial activity and modulation of intestinal secretions[4][5].
