Bismuth iodoform paraffin paste is a topical antiseptic and haemostatic packing material composed of bismuth subnitrate, iodoform, and liquid/soft paraffin, commonly applied on ribbon gauze for use in ear, nose, throat, dental, oral and maxillofacial, and neurosurgical cavities.[2][4][5][6][7] Bismuth subnitrate provides astringent and absorbent effects that reduce bleeding, while iodoform releases iodine to confer local antiseptic and mild anaesthetic action, and paraffin serves as an inert vehicle and lubricant.[4][5][6] The product is used to pack postoperative cavities or epistaxis sites to provide pressure, antisepsis, haemostasis, and support for grafts, but prolonged or extensive use can lead to systemic absorption of bismuth and iodine with rare cases of encephalopathy and other toxicities.[1][3][5][6][9]
