Bismuth nitrate, typically encountered as the pentahydrate [Bi(NO3)3·5H2O], is an inorganic salt that serves as a versatile precursor in the synthesis of bismuth-based nanomaterials and as a reagent in organic chemistry. In a pharmaceutical context, bismuth compounds are traditionally recognized for their astringent, antacid, and antimicrobial properties, particularly in the treatment of gastrointestinal disorders such as gastritis and diarrhea. Recent research highlights its utility as a Lewis acid catalyst and a regioselective nitrating agent for anilines and other aromatic compounds. Furthermore, it is extensively used in the fabrication of functional composites (e.g., with MXenes or carbon dots) that exhibit antimicrobial, antioxidant, and photocatalytic activities, the latter being applied for the degradation of antibiotic residues like ciprofloxacin in wastewater.
