Overview

Bismuth subcarbonate is an inorganic compound with the formula (BiO)₂CO₃, containing both oxide and carbonate anions. It occurs naturally as the mineral bismutite and is used primarily for its antacid, astringent, and antidiarrheal properties. Bismuth subcarbonate has been widely employed to treat gastrointestinal disorders such as indigestion, diarrhea, and peptic ulcers. Its mechanism of action involves local protective effects on mucosal surfaces in the gastrointestinal tract due to its astringent properties. Additionally, it is highly radiopaque and used as a filler in radiopaque catheters visible by x-ray; it also finds use in cosmetics and some pharmaceuticals[1][4][5][8].
